about

After a six year hiatus Athens, Georgia Sailor Winters has returned with a new 13 song full length entitled Blue Lines. Blue Lines finds Sailor Winters harkening to his roots which Flagpole writer Gordon Lamb describes as “black sea-walls of utter doom and resignation that suck you straight into a vertical whirlpool of despair and isolation”. Like his earlier material Sailor Winters uses keyboards, effects pedals, guitar, bass & some hand made instruments to create a new album that artfully mixes drone with power electronics to create a very thick, heavy but tranquil sound.

“Tug Champion”, the second song on Blue Lines is an eerie cacophony of crackling static noise with drone that while harsh at the same time the faint sound of compressors and radio static appear and disappear into the warmth of hissing drone that sounds like it could be what one imagines they would hear as they approach the island of the misfit toys. The faint hiss of Robby the Robot lost in time leading mangled machines of yesteryear that continue to churn onwards to oblivion.

“Sailor Winters is the sometimes sinister / sometimes darling work of Ryan Cox from the state of Georgia. He's released a 7" (Monolith on Tsunami Records), a few albums as well as many CD-Rs on his own label, Black Noise (including his sophomore effort, Owe). His music varies in style, but is always cohesive. There are times when his playful numbers bring to mind Aphex Twin, Necropolis-era DJ Spooky or very early Xiu Xiu. There are other times when his raging sounds will remind me of The Grey Wolves, Merzbow or Bastard Noise.” - Witch House
